The symptom is unmistakable once you know it: your internet is fine - until someone starts a big download, a cloud backup kicks in, or you upload a video. Suddenly video calls stutter, games spike to hundreds of milliseconds, and web pages hang. Then the download finishes and everything is instantly normal again.
Run a speed test during one of these episodes and it looks fine. That's the confusing part - and the clue. The problem isn't speed. It's bufferbloat.
Your router has a memory buffer where it queues data waiting to be sent. When a download or upload runs at full speed, that buffer fills up completely. Every other packet - your video call audio, your game's position updates, the web page you just requested - has to wait at the back of a long queue before it gets sent.
Each individual packet still arrives, so nothing "breaks." It just arrives late - often hundreds of milliseconds late. For a video call or a game, late is broken.
Measure your ping twice: once when the connection is idle, and once while a big download and upload are running. If ping jumps from ~20 ms idle to 300+ ms under load, that's bufferbloat. Speed test sites like Waveform's bufferbloat test automate this and give you a grade - as does the WiFi Doctor in our app, which grades latency-under-load automatically with every speed test.
fq_codel or cake. Turn it on.192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1) into your browser while on WiFi. The admin password is usually on a sticker on the router itself.
Paying for a faster internet plan usually doesn't help - a bigger pipe fills up all the same, and the queue behaves identically. Changing WiFi channels doesn't help either; bufferbloat lives in the router's queue, not in the airwaves.
